BUCKEYE BUZZ: OSU's Williams back, but Sabino may miss game

COLUMBUS — Coach Jim Tressel discussed several personnel matters on Tuesday.

S Orhian Johnson (undisclosed injury) will play vs. Miami, while DL Nate Williams (knee) is close to being cleared.

“Nate practiced some Sunday,” Tressel said. “He’ll practice today. I think the thing that you have to be careful with is guys that miss some training camp and all of a sudden if you think they can go out there and play 50-some snaps, I think you’re risking a little bit. So what we have to figure out in the course of this week is just how many snaps is he ready to go. He seems to be ready.”

• Freshman RB Rod Smith, out of Paul Harding HS in Fort Wayne, Ind., has finally joined the team after working through some “paperwork issues” that caused him to miss all of preseason camp. He will most likely be redshirted, although Ohio State’s coaching staff is waiting to see how he adjusts to the team and workouts.

• LB Etienne Sabino, penciled in as a starter heading into August, did not see any action in the 45-7 win over Marshall last Thursday.

Sabino lost the job during camp to Andrew Sweat.

“Right now, day-by-day we’re kind of redshirting him,” Tressel said. “He has no injury issues or nothing outside of football that’s a reason for him not playing. So for this moment, he’s redshirting and if everyone’s healthy going into the ball game, we’ll probably hold him (out). He was 19 when he came here and we needed him because we were just so thin.”

Storm Klein would be his nominal replacement as Sweat’s backup and on special teams.

DIFFERENT TIME,

DIFFERENT TEAM

CB Chimdi Chekwa grew up in Clermont, Fla., but wasn’t a fan of any of the numerous big-time college programs in the state.

He still remembers the 2002 national title game between Miami and Ohio State, however.

“I was a big college football fan but back then I was an LSU fan, so my team wasn’t in there,” he said.

Chekwa said he didn’t have any vivid recollections of that game, won 31-24 in double overtime by the Buckeyes to capture the national championship.

“I don’t really remember the whole game other than the overtime,” he said. “I just remember Miami having a great team, a lot of great players. Not knowing too much about Ohio State at that point. I remember rooting for Ohio State just because they were the underdog and them coming out with the victory.”

IT FIGURES

Who do you suppose was the only current Miami player mentioned by Tressel on Tuesday?

Nope, it wasn’t QB Jacory Harris. Not HB Damien Berry, WR Travis Benjamin, LE Allen Bailey, MLB Colin McCarthy, either.

The only player Tressel referred to was punter/kicker Matt Bosher.

“Their kicker/punter may be one of the best in the country,” Tressel said. “His hang times on punts are in the 4.8/4.9 (second) range, which is extraordinary.”
