The Kickoff: High School Football Week 2

Week 2 of high school football in Northeast Ohio tonight will feature another dose of non-league action.

Not until Sept. 17 will Portage Trail Conference teams get a chance to begin their respective quests for division titles.

That doesn’t mean the first three weeks don’t mean anything, though. Quite the opposite really, as the first three weeks of non-league competition can hold just as much importance on a playoff berth than anything else.

Here is a look inside tonight’s games and what to look for:

In honor of Robert C. Dunn

The Rootstown Rovers will honor longtime educator and coach Robert C. Dunn, who died on June 30, tonight by dedicating the football field in his name.

After tonight’s honor, the field will be known as Robert C. Dunn Field at Rover Stadium.

Dunn was Mr. Rootstown and the halftime ceremony in his honor was a fitting tribute by the school.

Familiar face within

Roosevelt-Stow matchup

After six seasons as the head coach of the Stow Bulldogs, Marty Tinkler is now with the Rough Riders.

Tinkler acts as Roosevelt’s defensive coordinator, but with new coach Mark Nori in place at Stow, Tinkler won’t know much about any previous schemes of the team.

However, Tinkler does have as much insight about the characteristics and talent of players that returned in 2010 than anyone else on the field, having watched them come up through the program.

inching toward redemption

It has been seven days for the Garfield G-Men. Seven long days since watching an opening-night victory slip away by mere inches.

After the final play of the game was called short of the end zone by less than a foot, the G-Men were forced to swallow one of the toughest losses in the Steve Wyllie era of football.

All that means for Garfield, though, is an opportunity to turn last week’s frustration into this week’s motivation.

another baby step?

The Waterloo and Windham football programs have been stuck in rebuild mode for the last few years.

Could 2010 be a different story?

If Week 1 proved any insight, the answer to that question would be yes.

No one is ready to call either team absolute challengers for the PTC County Division title just yet, but wins in Week 1 for both the Bombers and Vikings proved that the programs are different this year.

Tonight will offer the chance for each team to connect back-to-back wins for the first time in some time, which may not sound like much to many teams. However, for the hungry players on these two teams, it means more than anyone could imagine.

wind in the ship’s sail

The Southeast Pirates made a statement in Week 1: We are for real.

First-year head coach Steve Sigworth is smart, though, and so are his players. They know a season is not made after a win on opening night.

Nine more weeks remain, but the Pirates flashed enough last Friday to show that they could very well be challengers for the PTC Metro Division crown.

The offense was there: 48 points and 437 yards (199 rushing, 238 passing).

The defense did not dominate, but was respectable early, allowing 12 points by halftime before the game got out of hand in the second half.

Southeast’s test tonight will be Newton Falls.
