Associated Press CLEVELAND — Anthony Hitchens made a 3-pointer to open the second overtime and defending champion Akron held off Eastern Michigan 97-89 on Thursday in a heated quarterfinal matchup of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Zips (23-9) outscored the Eagles 9-0 to open the second OT and advanced to meet Western Michigan (18-14) in Friday’s semifinals. In the final minute of the second OT, Eastern Michigan coach Charles Ramsey picked up his second technical foul and was ejected for arguing. Also, Eagles forward Brandon Bowdry was tossed for a flagrant foul. Carlos Medlock scored a career-high 42 points and Bowdry had 21 for Eastern Michigan (17-15). Medlock’s 42 points were the second most in tourney history. Ron Harper scored 45 for Miami (Ohio) in 1985. Steve McNees led Akron with 18. The Eagles appeared to have an upset locked up at the end of the first OT, when Jay Higgins hit a 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left. With no timeouts left, McNees raced the ball up the floor and hit a step-back 3 — over a closing Bowdry — with less than 1 second remaining to tie it 81-all. Western Michigan 69, Central Michigan 60 CLEVELAND — David Kool showed why he’s the Mid-American Conference’s player of the year, scoring 24 of his 26 points in the second half to rally Western Michigan to a 69-60 win over Central Michigan in the MAC quarterfinals on Thursday. Kool missed all four shots in the first 20 minutes, but found his range after halftime when the Broncos (18-14) overcame a 14-point deficit. Western Michigan trailed 47-33 with 13:42 left before outscoring the second-seeded Chippewas (15-15) 36-13 the rest of the way. Flenard Whitfield added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Western Michigan. Robbie Harman led Central Michigan with 20 points. Miami 73, Buffalo 59 CLEVELAND — Kenny Hayes scored 27 points and Miami (Ohio) defeated Buffalo 73-59 in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament. Fourth-seeded Miami (14-17) meets Ohio in the semifinals Friday night. Buffalo (18-12) led in the first 2 minutes before Miami took charge. The RedHawks built an 18-point lead midway through the first half and led 32-21 at halftime. Buffalo chipped away early in the second half. Sean Smiley hit three straight 3-pointers, cutting the lead to 56-54 with 5:43 left. The RedHawks scored the next five points on Julian Mavunga’s basket and a three-point play by Antonio Ballard. Rodney Pierce’s three-point play cut the lead to four with 2:38 left, but Buffalo would get no closer as Miami made 10-of-12 free throws in the final 2 minutes.
