Staff and wire report

Aside from LeBron James, this weekend’s NBA All-Star weekend will be visibly absent of Cleveland Cavaliers.

James was voted in by the fans to be a starter at forward for the Eastern Conference team. His vote total was the most received by any player in history, topping two million.

The following week, NBA coaches selected reserves for each All-Star team. Last year, the Cavs’ were honored by the selection of Mo Williams.

With Williams rehabbing an injured shoulder, his omission from this year’s team was not a complete shock, but still considered a snub.

The list of missing Cavaliers seems to be growing by the day, though.

Beginning with Friday’s T-Mobile Rookie Challenge, which is a game that features the league’s best rookies against the league’s top second-year players.

Despite starting 46 games this season for the Cavaliers and averaging 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, Cleveland’s J.J. Hickson was not invited to the game.

Even when second-year Chicago star Derrick Rose was injured and forced to back out of the game, Hickson was not named as a replacement.

The selection of participants for Saturday’s 3-Point Contest was without a Cavalier despite the team having three players in the team’s top 10 for 3-point shooting percentage.

Daniel “Boobie” Gibson leads the league with his 47.3 percent, while Anthony Parker ranks fourth in the league at 45.2 percent.

Williams is the third Cavs player, ranking 10th in the league at 42.9 percent. His injury would have kept him from participating.

Those participating in the 3-Point Contest, followed by their percent, this year will be:

• Denver’s Chauncey Billups, 43.1

• Golden State’s Stephen Curry, 42.9

• Phoenix’s Channing Frye, 43.4

• New York’s Danilo Gallinari, 40.4

• Boston’s Paul Pierce, 45.6

• Miami’s Daequan Cook, 30.0

Cook was invited to participate after winning the 2009 contest.

Cleveland arena

removes drinking

fountains

CLEVELAND — The home of the Cleveland Cavaliers says it has removed drinking water fountains to prevent the spread of bacteria and illnesses, such as swine flu.

Fans who want a drink of water can get a small cup free at Quicken Loans Arena concession counters or pay $4 for bottled water.

Team spokesman Tad Carper says the fountains were removed in November. He says the team takes advice on such health matters from the National Basketball Association and the International Association of Assembly Managers.
