Well the board meeting was interesting to say the least.
We had 4 citizens speak before the meeting began and each one had some great things to say. Especially the one who spoke last concerning SAT and ACT scores. I wish there were more there to hear what she had to say. An exceptional presentation. And, as always, she ran over the 3 minutes. As I have said before, it is nearly impossible to get a point across within that three minutes without making yourself out to be a fool. Glad she hung in there to finish.
The representative from the schools insurance company gave a great presentation also seeing how the insurance company will be footing the whole bill. They stated our insurance covered us to the tune of $55 million, our builiding is worth 12.5 million and the contents valued at 3.5 million. So we had more than enough insurance even if the building, heaven forbid, burned to the ground, which again, I am so grateful to the fire departments that responded to prevent that from happening.
On another note, Mr. Grimm gave an exceptional presentation bringing us up to date on the condition of the school and the damage even providing some pictures of the fire's damage.
He was also the lone board member who voted No on releasing the Athletic Director. I believe he saw what the other board members are incapapble of seeing. Too bad. The Athletic Director had the energy and talent to really turn this district around and would have saved the district quite a bit of money. He had great ideas and concepts that would not have put any burden on the community or taxpayers.
Unfortunately, most of our board members did not, do not and most likely will never have vision that will benefit our children of this community.
If there is any way they could turn that decision around, they should do it. It almost appears the Superintendent feels he would have outshined her. At this point, I feel the same way. If there is any way to terminate a possible leader to save their face, I think this district will go to great strides to make sure it happens. Such a pity.
They still have many items in the consent agenda that should be discussed and this board needs to make agenda items available no later than one week before the business meeting. The day before or the day of the meeting is not satisfactory and it is a shame that the board continues to work in this matter. It appears they do not want the public to have the opportunity to reseach anything that may be put on the agenda and they surely don't want the public to know about it in enough time to do the research. They want us to participate, but they don't provide the opportunity to do the research to rebute anything they have on the agenda. And these guys want to get a levy passed.
It's a two way street folks and it should always be a two way street. Our district and board prefer the one-lane, one-way method. We really need to work on getting the last two elected in November to resign and we really need to get at least three new people on the board this November.
We need some true leaders on the Board and with how sad the ACT, SAT and 2008-2009 State Scores came in, it shows that small class sizes are not working, and the money was definitely not our problem. It was leadership and mismanagement of the funding.
We need to get more people of this community to attend meetings. We realy need it. If you complain and are one of the ones who don't attend these meetings, then you shouldn't be complaining.

I will be asking for reports, unfortunately, I have yet to meet the new treasurer and I will have to see if she is as dedicated and honest as Mr. Barnes.
Have to let the settle into the position before I start asking. Should take about a week if they are good, a little longer if they are nervous and if it turns out they are incompetent for the job it will take a lot longer.
There is one report I can't hardly wait to get my hands on. I know it will be shocking. May sure you have your oxygen close, and if you don't have any, a brown paper bag may be a good substitute.

Forgive me for being out of town but they laid off a person with a PhD who was making how much to replace them with a person who has less background in curriculum or special education but this person is being paid how much? What is wrong with this picture? Couldn't the lady with the PhD have assumed the responsibilities and built on her knowledge base. Seems to me she was already doing her job well but only her evaluation would tell for sure. If she had 50% of the job covered then learning the other wouldn't be so difficult. Isn't that what the assistant principal at defer is doing becoming the athletic director and assistant principal? Did he get extra money to take on the additional duties of the athletic position? The plot thickens. NO, guess we need someone which no central office experience to take on the job of two people, I am confused. Where do the additional monies come from to pay this person? Seems like we just got less for more money? Does it seem that way to the public.
What management style is this or should I be afraid to ask because it's becoming quite clear that it is lacking in judgment unless those performance evaluations shed some light on this.
Has anyone requested evaluations for all three of the people involved? One for the lady who got rif, one for the lady they hired and most importantly one for the superintendent with a central office turnover rate that is very high if you don't count the secretaries. It would seem that the students will be suffering first year team building amoung the central office staff all over again.................. but wait how many central office people do we have?
1. Superintendent (remember applied to Woodridge for a job)
2. New treasurer (with 4 year contract someone must really like her or we need to know who help her negotiate her pay package)
3. Transportation Supervisor and Building Supervisor ( still in the first year honeymoon phase.)
4. Newly Combined post of Teaching and Learning and Pupil Services (given to principal with limited experience). I guess she has started working?
Can we see if there were exit interviews done with the people who have been rif or who have left? That is a common business practice but it needs to be done by someone neutral. Somehow I get the feeling that we are not getting the whole story and that my friends makes me feel like my tax dollar is not being used wisely. Am I the only person feeling this?
The August 12 board meeting should be interesting? Understandings that the agenda is so people know what will be discussed at the meeting it would be good to see one in a timelier manner. Yes, I don't appreciate that lack of sufficient copies of the agenda at the board meetings but I guess because we complained about expenses this was a retaliatory salvo from the board. No wonder it takes that old guy so long to answer his phone when it rings during the meeting, bet he is using his cell phone browser to see the agenda on the web site when it is there. Maybe at the next board meeting we should take up a collection for paper so there can be more agenda's without taking paper from the needs of the students.
Well Mr. Fleming, I wish you would make some records requests and post them on your site. I live in fear that my need for answers would be played out on my children. Are the bobble heads, oh I am sorry, the board members asking any questions? Guess if we don't hear the board members asking then they are not and we will have to keep blogging so Mr. Fleming can get us answers. Please forgive my sarcasm it is the only thing that keeps us from arriving at the conclusion that we need to sell our home and become a better consumer looking more carefully at a school district before we make a new choice of homes.
What a crazy web we weave when we practice to deceive. Good luck central office administrators your longevity, unless you're the superintendent is little over a year so it might be in your best interest keep those resumes current. I don't think a four year contract is any harder to break than a two year one now is it?
Mr. Fleming let us thank you in advance for your dedication and your bravery.

You asked me where I got it from and I told you in post 105 and apparently you ignored it or didn't go back and read it that those weren't my words and the bit about the contract was also in that post and not my words so I guess I am confused about what I have to be ashamed about?

Martin, I didn't coin the four way street thing, it was posted by somebody earlier and I didn't want to plaigarize their comment when I used it in my response.

They came back from executive session and laid off Mrs. Longstreth and created the new position. She was very upset and I heard that she didn't even know this was coming until 3:30pm that day. Nice way to treat our employees.
Don't be surprised if the "new" position that combines the curriculum and pupil services doesn't end up going to the Asst. Principle at the High School. There is talk of her leaving the district but I'm not sure that is true. She is a buddy of the superintendent and wouldn't be surprised if this new position wasn't created just for her needs, with a nice pay raise to boot! Love the politics, Not!

4 way street. Yes my dear people the super highway even the turnpike has 4 often 6 lanes. Perhaps that wasn't a good example but please don't miss the message.
I heard from a friend that at the July 8th board meeting the Director of Teaching and Learning was laid off or will be at the next meeting on July 24 yes that is a Saturday at the board office at 9am. I don't get this havin meetins at 7am and 9am at the board house how can anyone attend? Are they in the Superintendent's office? There isn't an agenda on the website or minutes after that fact so we have turned into a covert operation now. ho hah that at least gives me some hope that someone might be thinking.
So, let see. The Supt applies for a job in another district so that must clearly mean she wants to leave, the AD gets laid off, the pupil services director gets laid off, hmmmmmmm every person the Supt hired has either left or she got rid of them, yeah that sounds like a winning team to me. We only have Principals but we don't even have enough of them to man our buildings. There is a problem here and how can we start a school year with so much chaos?
Are we using no money to ditch people who have done a good job? Wonder what their job evaluations look like? If they are laid off and we are getting a person to be both the Teaching Learning person and the Pupil Services person is this best? What professional would come to a district where people get laid off within 4 month of being hired? Sounds like a stable place to work to me NOT... would they be able to pay them with no money which is in the paper all the time.
I take what I do seriously, we do what is best for students who are they kidding?
So does this mean short cycle assessment for administrators doesn't work? Maybe it does and rather than using professional development to help them you just lay them off. Didn't the Superintendent get evaluated recently has anyone looked at that? It takes time to learn a job and begin to bring about change if we have new people every year it takes that long to learn the job, get settled and get programs in place to bring about change.
It would seem to me in the middle of this chaos that if someone was willing to be a Streetsboro Employee you might want to support them because even the news paper will tell you the working conditions there don't seem to be to inviting, now do they?
The board well there are two who need to think before they speak and not consider themselves news caster who have to tell the public what someone else said. Some seldom speak and anyone, anyone who cries in a public meeting is clearly too emotionally out of control to do much. Board meetings where Board members responds to public comments taking offense or having a I want you to know attitude well, whatever happened to the word Professional
Before I get off my soap box. Consider this
Perhaps some team building would best benefit this system so the news will be Streetsboro City Schools ranked excellent with distinction. Perhaps then we can find leaders with a plan to get this district to Excellent with Distinction who don't cry and the Board members need to get on this bus also.
I have seen a board member say if I live to see it and it has been apparent that she has been ill. Well here is a little advice if your illness is going to take your life do you really want to be in the middle of this stress or would the remaining time you have not be better spent with your family. Although I am sorry for the illness perhaps the medication needed has clouded your judgment and made you emotional. Please accept this as credit for having judgment in the first place.
I believe Children are the future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Can we say that here in the boro well the teachers can because despite pay concessions they haven't let the kids down and they are trying but it must be miserable to walk in their shoes. Whose gonna help the teachers, everyone will be new and still be getting a feel for their jobs. Well my hat is off to the teachers who have sacrificed monetarily and despite all the crying and laying off have the courage to cross the threshold to what they love, TEACH. The support people who were laid off will be losing their unemployment this month and life in the boro will be getting rougher. I applaud those who give their time to the schools, who read with their own kids, who are civic minded and have a strong enough stomach to speak for three minutes only to be heckled by elected board members who needs to LISTEN not respond. I found the Athletic Director and the Teaching and Learning Director to have had a plan, they spoke with passion and they HAD the best interest of our students at heart or it seems to me that they did. So, now we hire someone else and pay unemployment to the laid off people. Our property values are crashing down every time we get another bout of bad publicity no one will ever want to come here to live and the exodus will continue and I predict this, watch as the teachers who can no longer take the chaos begin to leave but who can blame them you only live once and better working conditions would be enough to make any one leave.
Well to the person who wrote that the last person in Streetsboro City Schools should turn out the lights off when they leave. There will be only one administrator who isn't a principal because Woodridge didn't select her is her hand on the light switch or are we already experiencing the darkness?
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Can anyone say what happened after the board's executive session on July 8th? I heard we lost ANOTHER administrator to a layoff. Can anyone provide information?

rocketgirl,
"I will tell the student to put on that article. I prefer this method as the student is not missing out on instruction."
The problem here is that this student has caused all the other students to miss out on an education for you had to deal with that student.
Letting them off by putting on another piece of clothing will only cause a problem for the next class, and the next class and so on.
You should eliminate the problem when it first started. Even though it is the first offense, you should send them to the office. It seems like you have to instruct students on dress code quite a bit.
Once you punish the first student with this method, it would be unlikely the other students won't test your patience.
I'd rather have one student miss out on an education than a whole class being affected by it.
As I have stated there should be no concern whethere it is a boy or a girl, if you say "Please report to the office for a dress code violation" and nothing more after that regardless of what is transpiring with the student, you will not have a problem in any way shape or form.
You don't need to say anything else. If you feel they are in violation then they are in violation.
Regardless of what you do or carmenlaudato there are teachers not following the policy. Thus the article in the Orbiter written by another student.
Now if you would like to discuss this further, then I recommend you go track down the student that wrote the article.
I tried to give the statement you need to say to absolve yourself from any repercussions. If you don't understand the method, then maybe you are in the wrong profession.

I still can't fathom what a 4 way street is.
I can't seem to get the picture.
Can anyone tell me what a 4 way street is?
Carmenlaudato was using this to explain the dress code.
The bottom line is, they got past their parents (or maybe not, maybe the parent just lets them go to school improperly dressed), then the bus driver misses it, the people standing at the door greeting the students missed but the teacher in the classroom who sees the student come in is the one to make the decision at that point that the student is improperly dressed.
If the teacher is the only one to notice it, then the teacher is the one that needs to send them to the office.
They stated a male teacher has to be careful expressing that to a female, and they state the female teacher has to be careful expressing that to a male.
All they need to say is "you must report to the office for dress code violation", that is all they have to say. Don't elaborate about the student, just say what I quoted above. Nothing more nothing less. That absolves the teacher from making any comment that might generate a sexual harrassment agains the school. There is nothing sexual about the statement. Now if a teacher says anything more than that, then the teacher gets what they deserve.
A simple statement telling the student to go to the office for a simple reason. It is difficult to understand why they go off on these tangents.
Just say, "please report to the office for a dress code violation".
Just keep repeating it until the student leaves or you get the principal down there to extract the student.
Send another student to go get the principal if you don't have access to a phone to do it. All the teachers most likely have cell phones so they could use that to get the principal to show up at the room.
They just make it more complicated than it needs to be.
