Just because you live in a rural area, does not make it safe for you to let your dog roam. While you think your dog is just running through the woods chasing squirrels, it is actually killing poultry and livestock at a neighboring farm. Today it was in my barn.
Don't for a minute think that I'm not waiting and watching for your dog to come back. Your dog was sent home with only a good swift kick to the jaw. Next time it will be a bullet. This is not the first time and will not be the last time a stray dog has to be dealt with due to lack of supervision by it's owner. My gun is loaded.
Once a dog finds a farm where it can chase livestock, it returns. It will continue to return until it is killed.
I love dogs. I have my own dogs. They stay on my property. Do I feel guilty for killing an innocent animal? Of course. But after seeing so many of my own animals killed and wounded, I have the right and duty to protect them.
By the way, you are responsible for the cost of replacing the livestock killed. You are also responsible for my vet bills from those wounded. You don't even want to think about how much money it can cost.

I do not agree, that dog is someone's family. Isn't your dog like part of your family. Would you not be hurt upset or sadden if someone killed your animal? how do you know for sure it was the dog. We do have wild animals running around and if you seen it happening why didn't you just shoot the gun to scare the dog off?

I just had a dog attack my daughters 4h rabbits.
I do NOT have dog. So why do i have to have the dodo in my yard. I have called the dog warden and they came out but still we have dead rabbits. I would never touch someone else dog because when i was a child our neighbors dog came over and bite me and i had to go through all the rabbies shots.
My shot gun is ready for the next dog that comes in my yard!!!

Blah blah blah. Milleram, I was done with you 4 posts ago.
I am curious to know the outcome of this situation. Poster, would you care to enlighten those of us who took an interest in your post as to how you handled your problem? No criticism, just curiosity.

So I can't choose to be empathetic for one person and not emptatheic for the next? I have to be empathetic for everyone? Wake up KSU. I'm sorry you're sickened by the thought of a dog being shot, but welcome to reality. It happens all the time, I'm sure. And yes, I opted to argue everyone's opinion in order to express my own. What I did NOT do was attack people's posts, say they weren't worth my time, and then continue to argue them. How does that saying go...don't argue with an idiot 'cause people won't be able to tell the difference? LOL
And since most of you have confused the point I was trying to make with my being angry, disrespectful and presumptious...let me post this which illustrates the exact "generalization" I was trying to covey. If you don't agree, that's fine. Call me angry, disrespectful and presumptuous.
HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2009
Scenario:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2009 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
Scenario:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins.. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2009 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.
Scenario:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the
Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2009 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then
tested for A.D.D. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey
has a disability.
Scenario:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a
whipping with his belt..
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and
becomes a successful businessman.
2009 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and
joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers
being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with
the psychologist.
Scenario:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2009 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally
explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU
files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English
teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma
anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.
Scenario:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts
them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2009 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
Scenario:
Wally falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found
crying by his teacher, Nancy. Nancy hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Wally feels better and goes on playing.
2009 - Nancy is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3
years in State Prison... Wally undergoes 5 years of therapy.
YES - these are all exaggerations. But it shows how society has shifted. Everyone has rights now, even dogs. While I'm not saying this is a bad idea, it's just that it isn't working how it was intended. It had a snowball effect and somehow it seems that we're all messed up worse than when it started way back when. I apologize for hurting anyone's feelings - it wasn't intentional. I never directed my assumptions to any one specific person. My post was merely to try to put things in a different perspective. Instead of focusing on the dog, maybe it would help to focus on the big picutre. And again, if that makes me disrespectful and not empathetical, then I wear those labels with pride.

If he has done that, then good for him. He should have included that in his post. I agree that dogs should be contained to a chain or a fence. I would never let my dog just roam no matter where I live, just because of liability reasons. You may have the nicest dog but if they are put in an awkward situation they may not handle as well as you may think they would. My whole point on posting any comments on this post is just to let the poster know that there are other routes. If he went those ways already then good for him, he has to do what he has to do.

How do you know he hasnt called the dog warden, or Human officer?? He may have gone all those routes already. ( Ive been there done that and the dog owners still could care less what happened to my live stock or children who may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time)And sorry but dont think your puppy is out smelling posies when romping through other folks property. First if any dog owner CARES about what may happen to their animal they WONT let it run loose, let alone respecting their neighbors, livestock, and pets. BE A RESPONSABLE DOG OWNER!!!!!!!!

Millerman 13- I think it is very ironic that everytime one of us have an opinion different than yours, you say " I like how you feel the need to argue it" well I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but as soon as someone posts an opinion the opposite of his, he feels the need to argue it. I'm really glad that sally and goldengirl agree with me.Like I said before, the owner may not even know what the dog has done. Make a visit to the owners, then the police/god pund/ whatever before taking your own actions against the dog. and once again mm6126, i completely agree with your post!
