Does anyone know if the rumor is true or not ?? If thats the case I will be able to get license plates on my car next month, if not then Im forced to sell it to a non testing county since the service engine soon light wont go out....or to someone that has the funds to fix it....I so wish they would just quit with all this nonsense since theres not a barrier up to stop pollution from coming into our county from a non testing county....trucks and semis cause more pollution then cars do anyways but they dont get tested ....

Trucks and Semis do not polute more than cars. Diesel engines run 10 times cleaner regarding oxides of carbon, the main gas being analyzed. I know you won't believe it because of the often seen black smoke, but it's the truth. Diesels used to have high oxides of nitrogen, which have since been lowered thanks to EPA standards.

It's true that passing traffic does not get tested, but wouldn't those same vehicles polute other counties the same, passing through?

Did it with the wife's car and had no problems.Found out later on it's some stupid oxygen valve by the gas tank, only cost 375.00 bucks to fix yeah **** that.

If they haven't expanded e-check by now I doubt they will, but,I agree it's a waste.
You still have planes, trains, and semi's that go through this county and that stuff isn't taken into account and isn't checked.
It's another unfair system implemented without voter approval.

There is a potential problem with disconnecting the battery to make the light go off. Yes, it will probably work, but it may also erase all the info in the computer, and the engine may not run right when you restart it. If you go to the station with no stored performance codes in the computer, then they are going to ask you why. Did your battery go dead recently? Did you just have your car worked on? Did someone erase the codes?

I know, it happened to me. My battery was dead the day before, I charged it and went to echeck the next day. That is how I know this.

Here's the problem, if there are no codes to read, it wont pass. They will ask if you want to sign a waiver and have a standard tailpipe test. If you do this, and it fails, then you must keep getting tailpipe tests until the car passes. You may not revert to OBD II testing. I did this and my truck passed fine, so it was not an issue. However, if you fail, it is harder to pass a subsequent tailpipe test than it is to pass an OBD II test.

Do as you wish with your car, but BEWARE!

Really?Really? - that does work with unhooking the battery cables, which is why I believe e-check is useless.

I agree with taking it to Autozone. Like Seriously said they are adding more counties that have to get tested. From what I heard all of the counties are suppose to be jumping on the E-Check ban-wagon.

If you unplug the battery and go have it tested, the computer still reads the problem. So that does not work. The light is just an indicator for you. The OBDII reads the system and lets the e-check system know what is wrong with the car. They are not ending it anytime soon, sorry.

When I got one of my cars tested last month, the operator told me that the EPA has lowered the emissions standards again, which means that another 26 Ohio counties will now be in violation of the limits. He said the program will be expanding, not getting smaller, so I would not look for it to end here anytime soon. The Autozone tip is a good one, try that and see if you can go from there. There was a mechanic who posted on another Echeck article a while back who said he would help anyone at a reasonable cost who had a car that needs work, maybe you could find that post in the archives. He put his number in there at the time.
Good Luck

Best to go to Autozone and get the scan run for free to address the problem. The code reader will point you in the right direction. Could be vacuum hose leak (easy fix), fouled spark plugs(change them for under $20). Don't dump your car because you think the worst. Even replacing the catalytic converter is an option, but you must fix the reason the check engine light is on.
I do believe test all or test none of the vehicles in Ohio!

Try disconnecting your battery cables. When I do that, the Check Engine light goes out. When I reconnect, it stays off for a couple hours, which is long enough to get e-checked. In my case, I think it's a catalytic converter problem that isn't detected right away. If you have some other problem it might not work, or it might not work with all cars. Since e-check is once every two years, if you get you car checked now, you can drive it until 2012.
