And, Helspont, that's why we have to recoil a bit, grit our teeth and get back to the welfare of people - all people. . .
. . . and, there's a difference between the Portage County Dog Pound and the Animal Protective League. The Dog Warden is hired by the county commissioners to run the program. I don't remember if they get any additional county money to operate the program other than the income from dog licenses.
The purpose of that fee is to maintain the operation; and the operation is spelled out in the good ole Ohio Revised Code, making it a law, providing enforcement powers, etc.
If the $12 dog license fee wasn't paid before January 31, it is now $24. When the dog warden employees canvass the area, it will be $24 plus the $100 citation and the cost of your time.
As soon as the snow disappears, they will be out checking for tags (part of their job as dog warden employees). When I stopped at the dog pound 6 weeks ago, he said they were going to be start canvassing the area north of the dog pound. I interpret that as Shalersville, Mantua, Hiram, Freedom, Nelson Townships; Hiram, Garrettsville, Mantua & Windham villages. Aurora has its own animal control officer, so he won't have to spend much time and effort there.
These are tough economic times - maybe your friend or neighbor would appreciate your providing the dog tags for their dogs this year. A short sheet of paper, a little bit of information, mail it in or drop it off, and the neighbor's/friend's dogs have tags.
People are sometimes forced to give up dogs. To be able to take a dog to the Portage County Dog Pound and know this dog warden will work to get it adopted is something Portage County residents are fortunate to have.
If you, your family, friends or groups can support the efforts of the Portage County Dog Warden with monetary contributions, items used daily - food, blankets, Kongs, etc., or your company can provide the products, labor and materials to enhance the operation with outside runs or whatever else is needed, thank you!
You just might find your next dog at P/C's Dog Pound.
