In a recent op-ed piece, Reg Henry asked whether Americans were getting dumber ("'Golden Age of Dumbness' or are we all just more stupid?" Record-Courier, Aug. 27) Perhaps not, perhaps so, but clearly many Americans have abandoned their reason in embracing a number of illogical complaints against President Obama. How can people believe that Obama is a Muslim after complaining about the UCC church he attended for years under the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? Is he actually a closeted, non-practicing Muslim? That ignores all the evidence to the contrary.
Many still believe that Obama was foreign born, specifically in Kenya. Is there any evidence his white, American mother ever visited Kenya? Does anyone really believe she traveled there just to have her baby in a Third World hospital?
Some commentators claim that Obama is a racist and hates white people. Considering that Obama's African father left the family early on and that he was raised by his mother's white family -- and they are the only family members he knows -- then we are asked to believe he hates his own family.
And recently some claim that Obama is raising taxes dramatically in letting the "Bush tax cuts" expire. The Bush tax cuts were not paid for, they were passed using "reconciliation," and they were set by their creators to expire after 10 years. Obama had nothing to do with it, and the expiration of tax cuts is not a tax hike on Obama's part.
Commentators and politicians often express confidence in the intelligence of the American people to see through these lies, but it appears to me that a substantial minority believes them. It's difficult to have a political discussion unless it is based on reality.
