As a founder of the Portage County TEA Party, I feel compelled to respond to Phillip Cox's letter ("TEA Party has sold out to GOP," Record-Courier, Feb. 11) and a recent editorial. One of the goals of the TEA Party is to encourage more of our county residents to participate, with knowledge, in the government process and encourage more people to run for office, giving us a better selection to choose a good officeholder. These elected officials serve the people, and when they don't listen to the people they need to be removed from office and replaced with people that reflect that ideal. That is the responsibility of the voters. We congratulate the GOP for working with us in an educational manner. The Democrats were invited in writing on more than one occasion to participate and did not even acknowledge the receipt of the letters with a declination and reason. They merely ignored the invitation. This was a disappointment to our Democratic members. Apparently, the GOP in Portage County has heard us now and knows they are being held accountable for their actions. Our government officials have become a source of embarrassment in some cases, a source of disgust in others, by not listening and spending far beyond our means. As citizens, we need to keep our elected officials' feet to the fire and demand fiscal and moral responsibility. The greatest hope for our country is the American people. We must be responsible and involved to keep our country the greatest country in the world. Beth Pullin Mantua Comments
