COLUMBUS — State agriculture officials have extended Ohio’s emerald ash borer quarantine to cover all 88 counties, and they continued to urge residents to refrain from moving firewood too far from home.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture announced the decision after infestations were confirmed in the Wayne National Forest in the southeastern part of the state.

Sixty-nine counties were covered by the quarantine prior to Wednesday’s decision.

The quarantine banned the movement of ash and hardwood firewood from affected counties. Extending the ban statewide means the prohibition is no longer in place, though officials say it’s still a good idea to buy and burn firewood locally.

“Limiting firewood movement helps the state protect against the artificial spread of many pests in addition to emerald ash borer, including gypsy moth and Asian longhorned beetle,” Ohio Agriculture Director Robert Boggs said.

Dan Herms, an entomologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster who has been involved in the state’s efforts to combat the emerald ash borer, added, “We’re finding that a lot of invasive species can move (through the transport of firewood). Just as a general rule, in terms of protecting forest health, it’s really a good idea to buy and burn your wood locally.”

A federal quarantine also is in effect, making it illegal to move ash trees and hardwood firewood outside of the state.

Emerald ash borers are small metallic green bugs that feed on ash trees, killing them in three to five years. The bugs were first discovered in northwestern Ohio in 2003, likely from Michigan.

Emerald ash borers are spreading at a rate of about 15 miles per year from the core infestation in northwestern Ohio and southern Michigan.

Information about treatment options is available online at www.ashalert.osu.edu.

DDT has NEVER been proven to cause cancer. A Bio Chemist drank the stuff to prove it. No one that ever worked in the factories got cancer due to it. The EPA banned DDT with nothing to back it but false research, just like this global warming garbage. If DDT was brought back I would have a big jug of it, and would regularly use it in my house. This is just an example of what happens when you let Eco terrorists take control.

DDT is an easy solution to all these bugs that are spreading, and causing problems, but we have a tree hugging population that put a block on this wonder spray. DDT has saved lives by killing malaria, and now we can't use it because it was so effective. Malaria has made a comeback because the lack of pest control.
