Activities coordinator Jonathan Floyd doubles as 'evangelist-in-chief'September 3, 2010
By Laura NETHKEN | FAITH & RELIGION EDITOR The 14th annual Volleyball Picnic Game will be held Sept. 11 at John Tontimonia City Park in Ravenna. This is thanks to Jonathan Floyd, the activities coordinator at the First Congregational Church of Ravenna. Floyd, a 32-year-old Ravenna man with Down Syndrome, has been the activities coordinator at the church for the past 14 years. "I do many things at the church and after 14 years of doing it, I still love working with the people there," said Floyd. It's all about the youth in the community for Floyd. He takes care of the recreation room at the church, which includes a pool table, air hockey game, hula hoops, board games, a ping pong table and more to entice area youth to "call the church their home." The recreation room is soon to be dedicated to longtime church member Dr. Edward Webb, who died in 2006. Floyd also organizes field trips to movies, is in charge of the athletic equipment at the church, and organizes the annual volleyball picnic, which this year will include a reunion of those who took part in the King's Kids Kamp, a program that lasted about 18 years. "It's time to get the word out -- from the Bible -- to gain our youth and more people to the ministry of God," said Floyd. "That's the 'big picture,'<200A><200A>" he said. According to the Rev. Pamela Canzater Cheney, the church's pastor, "Jonathan should be named 'evangelist-in-chief.'<200A><200A>" "He's very good at inviting people to our church and spreading the good news," she said. In fact, Floyd goes on Facebook every Thursday or Friday to "look people up and give them messages about attending church." "It's my own thing -- a Facebook ministry," he said. The picnic will be held from 2:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Memorial Shelter at Ravenna City Park. There will be musical entertainment and singing from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The event is open to young and old alike, and those attending should bring a dish to share "and a friend or two," he said. The picnic is the kick-off for the Sevens Program at held in the afternoons on Sundays, the seventh day, and is for seventh-graders and older. The church is located at 266 S. Chestnut St. in Ravenna.
