Portage Community Chapel in Ravenna recently sponsored a mission outreach to the Roseland community on the south side of Chicago, ministering to the street and homeless residents.

The team consisted of five adults -- Jimmy McNutt, worship and youth pastor; Kathy DeYoung; Allen Smerchansky; and Jim and Dolly Robinson -- and 20 teens -- Andy Anderson, Aubrey Blubaugh, Halsey and Sonny Canfield, CJ Coblentz, Brandon and Timothy Dreger, Matthew Genova, Ryan Hausch, Austin Jarvi, Megan Miller, Jon and Sarah Scibiur, Rachel and Nick Sigworth, Zach Wine, Jessie Zevotek, and Nicole, Allison and Andrew Miller.

The community outreach included prayer walks, visiting with neighbors in the Roseland community, helping with daycare needs, and ministering on the beach of Lake Michigan and nearby parks, including Millennium Park.

Participants provided music, Vacation Bible School, mime dramas, meals and other needs for the homeless.

The team toured the Pacific Garden Mission, a facility that meets the needs of many homeless and needy families in Chicago.

The team was housed at Roseland Community Good News Day Care, which ministers to teen mothers and low-income working mothers who have a desire to go back to school or get out into the work field.

It was created because of the life story of Ms. Pearl, who is the administrator of the day care center.

The EDGE, Adventures in Missions, assisted in leadership and was the liaison for the outreach, providing Bible study lessons and guidelines for the training preceding the outreach.
