The gray, weathered and chipping paint on the supports of the Haymaker Parkway overpass spanning both the Cuyahoga River and Franklin Avenue is speeding toward its demise.
Plans for a mural on the two eastern-most supports of the bridge made progress this week after Kent City Council agreed to officially allow the Haymaker Farmers’ Market to proceed with the mural.
Wednesday, council members unanimously approved a license to occupy, which will permit the market’s organizers to paint the supports. The license is a legal requirement per the bridge’s owner, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and it frees ODOT from any liability should future maintenance to the bridge damage the mural.
“This is a breath of fresh air to have a mural rather than graffiti,” Councilman Jack Amrhein said shortly before council approved the license.
Earlier this summer, the Ohio Arts Council awarded the market a $1,000 grant for the mural on the Redmond Greer Bridge.
Fritz Seefeldt, director of the market, said earlier this summer the group hopes to have the mural up before the market’s season ends in October.
