Around Brimfield by Shirley Mars

In my opinion, the thing that makes our community a great place to live is the people who call Brimfield home. Some inspire me to be a better person. Rita Newell-Bender, who battled cancer for many years and passed away on Aug. 3, is one such person. While I did not have the privilege of personally associating with Rita, I have had occasion to chat with her parents, Ron and Lois Newell. Throughout our conversations, Ron often mentioned that Rita never complained. Others who knew Rita made the same observation. Since I have been complaining quite a bit lately at having a pesky rash that won't go away, I find Rita's example extremely admirable. I am reminded of the proverb, "Instead of complaining that the rosebush is full of thorns, be happy that the thornbush has roses." While Rita's life was full of thorns, she chose to see the roses -- a good lesson for all of us.

Ninth-grader Abby Chasar set an example of selfless service recently when she donated her hair to Locks of Love. Tammy Feciuch had the honor of cutting Abby's locks. Abby is on the Field High School cross country team and has participated in "Walk for a Cure." Her sacrifice will benefit a grateful cancer patient.

Enjoying ice cream at Frank's when children and grandchildren come to visit appears to be a tradition for more than just our family. We were there recently and had a pleasant time visiting with Frank and Linda Wetmore, their children and grandchildren. It was delightful catching up with Coletta and Shane who attended Field Schools. Coletta and her husband, Craig Smith, live in Castle Rock, Colo., with their children, Rochelle and Lynae. Craig is a minister and Coletta is a teacher who is home-schooling their children. Shane lives in San Diego, Calif., with his wife, Virginia, and their children Greer, Emersen and Hudson. Both Shane and Virginia are attorneys.

Grows Green Acres Horse Farm on Congress Lake Road may not be in Brimfield, but it is close enough and is definitely worth mentioning. Along with their boarding business, the Grow family operates "Kids Love Pony Parties" and advertises customized pony rides for any budget. Since five of our granddaughters happened to be visiting us on my birthday, we decided to celebrate with a pony party. Upon arriving, the girls groomed and decorated Princess the mini-horse, who is obviously accustomed to being fussed over and decorated with a basketful of accessories. Imagine a real-life My Little Pony who actually smiles for pictures. When Princess was totally decked out, it was time for rides on a very gentle pony named Peanut. Not wanting to miss any of the action, Rusty the donkey, sporting a straw hat, made quite a commotion until he was let out of his stall to join the party. According to the girls, it was one of the highlights of their summer, and we are the best grandparents EVER. For more information, go to www.kidsloveponyparties.com or call Carla Grow at 330-628-4556.

The annual Brimfest set at the Town Center Park on Sept. 17, 18 and 19 is sure to liven things up. Sponsored by the Brimfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the festivities include carnival rides, a bake-off, Brimfield Idol contest, chili cookoff, corn hole and horseshoe contests, a pet show, and the Little King and Queen contest. The Brimfest will conclude with fireworks on Sept. 19. For more information and entry forms go to www.brimfieldchamber.com.

Anatole France offers the following advice: "Never lend books, for no one ever returns them; the only books I have in my library are books that other folks have lent me." Rather than borrow books, why not buy them for almost nothing from the book sale at the Brimfield Library on Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Brimfest 5K Race will be held on Sept. 11. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Brimfield Plaza and the race begins at 8 a.m. The race fee is $15 with proceeds benefiting the Field cross country program. Checks should be made payable to Field Athletic Boosters. All pre-registered runners are guaranteed a shirt. The course is flat and fast. To pre-register, download the entry form at www.brimfieldchamber.com. A free Fun Run for children 12 and younger begins at 8:45 a.m. For more information, contact Steve or Bev Bable at 330-802-9822 or at srbable@yahoo.com.

The Brimfield Police Department is sponsoring a DARE to Recycle Paper and Shred It Day on Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in their parking lot at 1287 Tallmadge Road. The Shred It truck, sponsored by the Dennis Taylor Insurance Agency and the Home Savings Bank of Kent, Brimfield Branch, will be available to shred up to five grocery bags per person of confidential paper.

Congratulations to our new superintendent of Field Schools, Beth Coleman. In Beth, we have a leader who is a graduate of Field, lives in the district, has children who attend Field, and has every intention to retire from Field. She is dedicated and highly qualified. If ever there was an opportunity for Field to make long-range plans and implement them, this is it.

Finally, the Falcon Academy of Creative Arts is already bustling with activity. During the recent open house, students eagerly painted their names in bright colors on the front windows. Some classes are at full capacity, but there may be a few available spots. For more information, contact Superintendent Beth Coleman at 330-673-2659, ext. 5001.
