I am so sick of seeing salt and plow trucks parked on the Ohio Turnpike one to four hours prior to the "possibility" of snow and the drivers sleeping. I totally understand being prepared but do you think a truck needs to be parked across the highway from their garage with the egine running and the driver sleeping for two hours? Having the trucks loaded and ready prior to snow, absolutely -- but with today's ability to watch the weather those drivers actually could be doing something other then sleeping during the time before the storm. How long would it take them to drive out a mile or two from the garage a little ahead of the snowfall and be ready to work? Two to four minutes? Now explain to me how sleeping in that same position on the highway -- with the enging running -- for one to four hours earlier is cost efficient and gets the job done any better? I drive the turnpike both directions almost every day and have seen this going on for years. One day I was driving in a whiteout on the turnpike at 25 mph on totally covered roads for two exits and never saw a plow truck on either side of the highway. When I went through the toll booth I mentioned how bad the roads were and not seeing a truck anywhere and I was told they "would get to it." At that point it only seemed fitting to ask if maybe someone forgot to wake them up since they were out there three hours before the snow hit sleeping, with the engine running? The attendant told me -- and I quote -- "They are out there earlier to assure they get their overtime." They just raised the rates again on a highway that was supposed to charge tolls only until the original project was paid for and now we are paying for drivers to sleep for hours and obviously not giving us anything for our money at that time. Everyone that has witnessed what I have, please call the state and tell them to start using that money a little smarter and that we are tired of the totally incompetent method of scheduling drivers for nap time.
