Tired of threats on snow shoveling

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

A recent story, "Court warns 11 over sidewalks" (Record-Courier, Feb. 17) noted that a ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court states that property owners cannot and will not be punished for failure to shovel a natural accumulation of snow and ice from abutting sidewalks. Also, under Ohio law, homeowners are not obligated to shovel sidewalks, according to the Ohio Insurance Institute.

The Ohio Supreme Court is very clear on this matter. In a perfect world, one would expect that this issue is now settled for good. However, in the real world in Kent, Ohio, we will be coerced into believing that we must shovel or snow or face a fine from City Hall, starting in November 2010.

Yes, folks, the threats will be issued again next fall just as they have for the last 78 years (my time in our fair city.) Count on it.
