By Dave O’Brien Record-Courier staff writer They came from Cleveland and North Olmsted. From Brunswick and Ashtabula. From Bowling Green in the west and Pennsylvania in the east. They came to Kent to drink alcohol, to parade around in outrageous costumes and to party with friends. And some of the thousands who descended on the city — 78, to be exact — were arrested late Saturday night and early Sunday morning in Kent during the unofficial Halloween festivities. According to Kent police, 75 adults and three juveniles were on the wrong side of the law when the final numbers were tallied. Portage County Municipal Court Judge John Plough saw most of them Sunday during arraignments in his Kent courtroom. Kent Police Chief James Peach said Thursday that many revelers were expected to be from elsewhere in Northeastern Ohio. Few of those arrested appeared to be KSU students or even Portage County residents, according to Kent police booking records. Kent police — their ranks bolstered by deputies and officers from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Brimfield police, Kent State University police and the Metro SWAT team — fielded 98 calls between 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. That includes 36 arrests for underage drinking, 25 arrests for disorderly conduct, four unlawful noise complaints, three arrests on outstanding warrants, two assaults and one felony vandalism arrest. According to Kent police, Ryan Hill, 22, of Chagrin Falls originally was arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct. While in the city jail pending arraignment Sunday, he allegedly kicked the jail’s portable shower stall “several times,” destroying it. The charge is a fifth-degree felony, according to Kent police. Two cars were reported stolen. Kent police also stopped 12 cars, responded to three assaults, two domestic incidents and one burglary, one robbery and a sex offense. The Kent Fire Department, assisted by numerous other Portage County departments, received 30 calls for assistance, including a house fire at 605 Crain Ave., which is being investigated as arson by Kent police. One unidentified Kent firefighter was reported injured in that blaze. The Aurora, Mantua-Shalersville, Streetsboro, Ravenna, Ravenna Township and Stow fire departments provided mutual aid. The evening was not without its lighter moments. One arrestee fittingly listed his occupation as “monster” (he works at an Akron-area haunted house). Another listed his military recruiter as his “next of kin.”
