2,027 without power after Deerfield crash: Ravennan hurt when milk truck flips, rolls into electrical poleOctober 6, 2009
By Diane Smith Record-Courier staff writer DEERFIELD — An early morning semi truck rollover closed U.S. 224 for hours Monday and left more than 2,000 people in four communities without power. The milk truck, driven by Kenneth Miller, 45, of Ravenna, went off the road and ended up in a ditch, according to Dave Allison, assistant chief of the Deerfield Fire Department. The truck then flipped over, damaging an electric pole and several wires. The road was closed from about 5:12 a.m. until early Monday afternoon. The cab of the truck, owned by Ruffner’s Trucking of Suffield, was destroyed. Although the truck was carrying 6,000 pounds of milk, none of it spilled on the roadway. However, a fuel tank ruptured, and the diesel fuel leak required assistance from more than a dozen Deerfield firefighters, plus officials from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Also on hand were officials from Ohio Department of Transportation, the Ohio Highway Patrol and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office. The Deerfield Fire Department transported Miller to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for treatment of minor injuries. Mark Durbin of Ohio Edison said 2,027 people were without electrical service Monday. Power was restored in segments, with 784 people restored by 6:11 a.m.; 784 back online by 6:50 a.m.; 341 restored by 7:55 a.m. and 119 restored by 1:22 p.m. The bulk of the affected customers were in Deerfield, with a few people in Atwater, North Benton and Mogadore affected.
