By day, members of the Garrettsville Curtains Up Community Theatre serve as students, an engineer, an Army Reserves recruiter and a Portage County prosecutor. By night, they will become the singing, dancing and acting students and professors at the legendary New York High School of Performing Arts.

The theater group will present David De Silva’s “Fame: The Musical” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and June 26-27 and at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Iva Walker Auditorium of James A. Garfield High School.

The show follows a group of young aspiring stars through their high school careers. The students must balance their academics, performances and social lives while continuing their quest for fame.

Jackie Loreta-Rinearson, founder of the Garrettsville theater group, said she chose “Fame” because its tricky vocals and range of musical styles would challenge the performers. The show incorporates everything from ballads to rap.

“You have to have a whole cast that is equally talented,” she said. “Everybody needs to hold their own.”

Though this is the fourth Garrettsville theater production, it is the first time that the show will be accessible to the hearing impaired. A Kent State University student will provide a sign language translation at each performance.

Rinearson said she has enjoyed theater her entire life so she started the group about three years ago because she felt it was something that the Garrettsville area needed. The “Fame” cast includes people from Akron, Hiram, Kent, Newton Falls, Ravenna, Windham, Warren, Garrettsville, and even a Hiram College student from California.

“It’s a community theater, but its not a Garrettsville theater,” she said. “It’s for everybody.”

Tickets to “Fame” are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and children and $5 for groups of 15 or more. For information or tickets, call 216-375-0709 or visit www.garrettsvillecurtainsuptheatre.com. Tickets also will be available on site before each performance.
