NELSON - Eleven students received minor injuries this morning when a school bus carrying children from the James A. Garfield school district was involved in a two-vehicle crash in the area of Windham-Parkman Road and Ely Road.

According to Chief David Friess of the Garrettsville-Nelson-Freedom Joint Fire District, the 11 students were from James A. Garfield High School and suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were taken to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for treatment and evaluation. The driver of a second vehicle involved in the crash also was hospitalized for treatment, Friess said. He said the bus driver did not request treatment.

Friess said the bus and pick-up truck collided, and the driver of the pick-up had to be extricated from the vehicle. Crews freed the driver in about 12 minutes, Friess said.

Jennifer Farquar, spokeswoman at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, said the hospital treated no life-threatening injuries as a result of the morning's bus crash.

"We saw 11 students (Friday) morning," Farquar said. "Almost all have been discharged at this point. They had minor injuries. Some of them bumped their heads. They were all in stable condition, though. So mostly, as a precaution, we evaluated them, did physical exams to clear them, decided who needed x-rays, and they were discharged to their parents.

"We also saw the driver of the pick-up truck, they're in stable condition," she said. "We did not see the bus driver."

The pick-up truck driver suffered minor injuries, Farquar said.

Emergency crews were notified of the crash at 7:10 a.m., Friess said, and squads from Community Ambulance as well as the Hiram and Mantua-Shalersville fire departments responded to the scene to transport the injured.

School officials could not be reached for further details because they are all on the scene, according to a board office employee.

The Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is on the scene investigating.

This accident happened right in front of my house. The Record Courier is actually correct (WKYC was not) in the 9 students who went to the hopital. The truck driver also had to go to the hospital and the bus driver did NOT. They collided head on and the bus went through a tree and into a phone pole. It also took almost 30 minutes before any police were even on the scene and about 2 hours before they turned power off & got the students off the bus because of the live wires hanging off the bus. But most important nobody was injured too badly or killed... very luckily because it was a pretty bad crash. The pick up was totalled and the bus was very smashed up in the front.

I went down that road about 20 min. before this happened, and there was quite a bit of snow on the road. I always worry about getting too close to the ditch or to the passing car in the other lane, because with the snow I can't tell where to be. I'll bet the truck was going faster than it should have been.

Tellnitlikeitis, I guess if it's on TV as opposed to in print journalism it has to be true? According to a very credible source there were 12 patients transported to the hospital, 11 students and the other driver. The bus driver was not taken by ambulance. I would like to say nice job to all emergency personal for handling this mass casualty incident very well.

The injury information was provided by Jennifer Farquar at Robinson. Maybe WKYC was incorrect.

So according to the WKYC news at noon, the bus driver and the driver of the truck where both listed as being in stable condition in Robinson Memorial Hospital. The Record Courier states the bus driver didn't request treatment. Also only 9 students where evaluated for scrapes and bruises, not 11. The total number of injuries is listed as 11, 9 students and 2 drivers. Way to go, top notch reporting as always from the Record Courier.
