I know it's hard to believe but the end of summer is upon us. If your summer was anything like mine, it was a blur of one fun activity after another.

Streetsboro Family Days was a great success this year, and appeared to have record numbers attending. The Streetsboro Heritage Foundation held a 50/50 raffle at this year's Family Days. Janet Ferrante won and graciously donated her winnings back to the Foundation.

The Streetsboro Heritage Foundation was formed recently to save the Singletary House, which was located on the land where the new Wal-Mart and other retail businesses now stand. The Singletary House is the oldest house in Streetsboro. Built in 1828 by Col. John Singletary, it originally sat on the square in Streetsboro, where Flowerama is today.

In the 1970s, a Red Barn restaurant was going to build on that spot, so Hank and Betty Defer had the house moved to its second location and lived in it for many years. When Wal-Mart bought the Defer property for the current retail expansion, the Singletary House was in danger of being destroyed.

The Streetsboro Heritage Foundation was formed to move the house once again, and to maintain the house. The home is a valuable piece of local history, and I hope they are successful. The Foundation is currently exploring grants as a source of funding, but is also in need of private donations.

If you're interested in helping either by way of donation or as a volunteer with the Foundation, call Betty Defer at 330-677-1163

Streetsboro resident Ted Hurd recently hosted the monthly Ohio Region Studebaker Drivers' Club meeting at his home. Forty-five people attended, bringing 18 Studebakers with them. Members brought non-perishable items with them to donate to the Streetsboro Community Pantry.

The pot-luck dinner brought Studebaker lovers from all over Northeastern Ohio together to swap Studebaker stories and plan for the big annual meeting that will be held in September at Winks Fabulous '50s Diner in Barberton. More than 150 Studebakers, along with their drivers, are expected to attend. If you're interested in joining the fun, call Ted Hurd at 216-407-1177.

Speaking of the Streetsboro Community Pantry, they are working hard these days, servicing more than 50 families a month. The Pantry is still housed in the United Methodist Church on S.R. 43 in Streetsboro.

Formerly known as the Christian Cupboard, the Pantry continues to provide for those in need in our community. They recently had a food drive in conjunction with the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority, and had a PARTA bus parked at both Giant Eagle and Wal-Mart. They were able to fill both buses up through donations from patrons at both locations.

The drive was successful, but the need is so great that the food goes out almost as fast as it comes in. There is a constant need for donations.

If you're interested in making a donation, you can take it directly to the United Methodist Church. Besides non-perishable food items, the Pantry can also use personal items like toilet paper, Kleenex, shampoo, diapers, etc. And of course, they can always use more good volunteers.

For more information, you can call board president Ellen Poole at 330-626-3749. If you're in need of the services that the Pantry provides, simply call 211. Someone from the Pantry will get back to you to make an appointment. Services are by appointment only, and they meet with people six days a week.

The 2008 Community Showcase and Business Expo sponsored by the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce is going to be held on Sept. 27.

This is one of the largest community events we have, with 1,500 people expected to attend. The show was originally scheduled to be held at Streetsboro High School, but it conflicted with Streetsboro's Homecoming, so the event has been moved to Streetsboro Middle School.

As always, local businesses will be on display, with lots of giveaways, prizes and guest appearances by many interesting characters, including Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. There will be another Taste of Streetsboro, with many local restaurants participating. And calling all crafters -- you are wanted to take part as well.

The Chamber of Commerce opens this event to crafters all of sorts, so you can get a jump on the holiday selling season with a booth at the Showcase. Call the Streetsboro Chamber of Commerce for more details at 330-626-4769.

You know that summer really is coming to an end when Friday night football returns. Friday night is the Rockets' home opener against the Ravenna Ravens. It is also Family Night, with the Streetsboro Junior Rockets Teams being recognized before the game and fireworks after the game, sponsored by the City of Streetsboro.

The Rockets are coming off a win last week at the season opener against Independence, so it's a great night to come out and support the team. And between the football game, cheerleaders, marching band and fireworks there is something for everyone.

Hope to see you there. Go Rockets!
