BRIMFIELD -- Ground is expected to be broken in March for a new 64,000-square-foot Kohl's department store coming to The Cascades on Tallmadge Road.

The store will be located nearest to Lowe's, said Dick Messner, the township's zoning inspector and planning director.

Not much is known about the project because it is in its infancy stage, but this isn't unusual, he said.

"We're finding with the big box stores that there are no personal contacts with corporate until the job's under way," Messner said.

Messner made news of Kohl's plans public at this week's township trustees' meeting.

He has completed a plan review and a zoning permit has been issued for construction. The township's fire department also has signed off on the plans.

The next step for Kohl's will be to clear sewer, water and storm water plans with Portage County authorities. The plans also have to go before the Portage County Regional Planning Commission, Messner said.

"We're already getting a great feedback from people wanting to shop there," Messner said. "It'll be a nice anchor back there, and, hopefully, will set off a domino effect for businesses to come in," he said.

The 114-acre Cascades, located near the Brimfield-Tallmadge border, is a mixed-use development anchored by a Wal-Mart superstore. It includes 216 apartment units and more than 600,000 square feet of retail and commercial space.

The developer for the project is 3D Real Estate Partners LTD of Cleveland. The company owns The Cascades.

Representatives from Kohl's corporate office in Menomonee Falls, Wisc., did not return calls Thursday.

The Cascades store will be the first Kohl's in Portage County, although Kohl's stores are located near the county's borders in Stow and Bainbridge.

Kohl's operates 817 stores and five distribution centers in more than 40 states.

How nice for Brimfield and Tallmadge taxpayers. The stores in this Plaza advertise themselves as Kent stores together with a Kent phone number and address. While the experts on Kent Council raise income taxes and spend the city into bankruptcy buying Real Estate the smart leaders of Brimfield and Tallmadge make the real money from real developement wihout tax increases. Maybe the Kent voters should petition themselves for annexaction to Brimfeild or Tallmadge. Oh, I forgot they do not have a KSU, a downtown or a bog to waste tax dollars on.

Woo Hoo! I hope Brimfield fixes the road and mows the grass in the median, the area is in need of some sprucing up.
